The X caption length guide

How long a caption should be on X, and when breaking the rule is worth it.

X still rewards brevity more than almost any other platform, even though the character limit for most accounts now stretches well past the old 280. The limit changed; the reading behavior didn't.

The default: one idea, as few words as it takes

The best-performing posts on X tend to be short not because short is a rule, but because a single, sharp idea rarely needs more than a sentence or two to land. If you're padding a post to make it look more substantial, that padding is usually the first thing to cut.

  • Say the thing in the first line. There's no algorithm reward for burying it.
  • Cut qualifiers — "I think," "in my opinion," "just my two cents." X rewards conviction, even when the take is small.
  • One idea per post. If you have two, that's two posts.
On X, the caption's job is to survive the scroll, not to cover every angle of the argument.

Why brevity still wins

X's feed moves fast, and the reply culture means people are scanning for something to agree with, disagree with, or riff on — not something to sit with. A long, hedged post gives people less to grab onto. A short, clear one gives them a single handle to pull.

When longer is the right call

Long-form does work on X, but it earns its length rather than assuming it:

  • Threads for step-by-step or numbered content. Breaking a longer idea into a thread keeps each post readable while letting the full piece run long. Number them if the order matters.
  • A single long post for a genuinely dense, self-contained explainer — something where breaking it into a thread would fragment the logic. This works best when the first line alone is strong enough to stop the scroll before anyone sees the length.
  • Quote-posting your own longer take onto a shorter hook. Say the punchy version standalone, then let people click through for depth if they want it.

A structure for threads

  1. Post one is the whole idea compressed to one sentence. It needs to work even if nobody reads further.
  2. Each following post is one step or one point, not a paragraph dump.
  3. Last post is the takeaway or the CTA — what you want someone to do with what they just read.

The test before you post

If you can delete a sentence and the post still makes its point, delete it. X punishes hedging and rewards clarity more consistently than any other platform — write like every word costs you something, because on this platform, attention-wise, it does.
