YouTube has the most mature monetization stack of any platform, and also the highest production cost per post. Here's the quick version, ranked by effort.

1. Affiliate links in the description (lowest effort)

Nearly zero extra work once a video is made — drop affiliate links in the description and mention them verbally so viewers actually scroll down. Works especially well for review, tutorial, and gear content where the purchase intent is already there.

2. YouTube Partner Program ad revenue

Once you hit the eligibility thresholds, ads run automatically. No extra content required, but you don't control it directly — revenue depends on watch time, video length, and advertiser demand in your niche (finance and tech niches pay more per thousand views than most others).

3. Channel memberships

Memberships work best when a meaningful slice of your audience already comments and reacts regularly — that's the group who'll pay for a badge and some perks. Setup is a few hours to configure tiers and perks; ongoing effort is small extra content (member-only posts, early access) layered on what you're already making.

4. Sponsored videos

The biggest earner for most mid-size channels. Setup means a media kit and rate negotiation; ongoing effort is weaving a sponsor segment into videos without tanking retention. Rates are typically quoted per thousand views and scale with average view duration, not just subscriber count.

5. Your own product or course

The most effort: building something to sell that a video merely introduces. YouTube's searchability gives products unusually long tails — a well-made tutorial can keep selling a linked course for years after publish. This requires both the video and the product built well, which is a real project on top of the channel itself.

Quick take

Start with affiliate links on any video with buying intent — it costs nothing. Layer in ad revenue once you're eligible. Everything above that is a real negotiation or a real product, and worth doing only once you know your audience well enough to know what they'd actually pay for.
