Making money on Instagram: every option, ranked by effort

Brand deals, affiliates, subscriptions and your own products on Instagram, from least to most work.

INSTAGRAM

Instagram has more built-in monetization surface area than most platforms, which is both an advantage and a trap — it's easy to spread effort across five half-used features instead of doing one or two well. Here's the realistic ranking, from least to most effort.

Lowest effort: affiliate links and codes

Instagram supports product tagging and link stickers in Stories, plus plain affiliate links in bio or captions. For creators already posting about products they use, this is close to zero marginal effort — you're monetizing content you'd make anyway.

Low effort: Instagram's built-in creator monetization

Bonuses and monetization programs tied to Reels performance exist in some markets and shift over time, so it's worth checking current eligibility in your region directly in the app rather than assuming a program still works the way it did a year ago. Where available, this pays for content you're already producing — no separate deliverable required.

Medium effort: sponsored posts and brand deals

This is where most Instagram creator income actually comes from once an account has real engagement. The effort is concentrated in pitching, negotiating, and occasionally reshooting to a brand's spec — the content itself is often close to your normal format.

The jump from "posting content" to "making money from Instagram" for most creators happens at brand deals, not at any of Instagram's native monetization features — those tend to supplement income, not anchor it.

Medium-high effort: subscriptions and close friends offers

Paid subscriber content — exclusive Stories, behind-the-scenes access — requires an audience willing to pay for more of you specifically, which usually means a longer runway of free content first to build that trust. The ongoing effort is real: subscribers expect consistent extra value, not a one-time perk.

High effort: your own product

Using Instagram to sell your own physical or digital product — merch, a course, a service — is the highest-effort option because you're building and fulfilling a product on top of the content itself. It's also the option with the highest ceiling and the least platform dependency: your income isn't capped by a brand's budget or a platform program's payout rate.

How to actually sequence this

Most creators shouldn't try all five simultaneously. Start with affiliate links because they cost nothing extra, layer in brand deals once engagement is strong enough to pitch credibly, and treat your own product as a deliberate, separate project once you have an audience that consistently shows up — not something to bolt on while still building that base. Trying to monetize five ways before any one of them is working usually means none of them get the attention they need to actually pay off.
