Content pillars for Bluesky, explained

Three to five themes that make planning a month of Bluesky posts far easier.

Content pillars are the three to five recurring themes you post about, so that "what do I post today" becomes "which pillar am I due for" instead of a blank-page problem every single time.

Why Bluesky specifically benefits from pillars

Bluesky's audience skews technical, opinionated, and allergic to anything that reads as marketing. A pillar system helps here because it keeps you posting substance regularly instead of reaching for generic filler when you're short on ideas — and generic filler is exactly what this audience scrolls past fastest.

Picking your pillars

Good Bluesky pillars tend to fall into a few shapes:

  • A specific expertise or niche take — the thing you know that most people in your space get wrong or oversimplify.
  • Process and behind-the-scenes — Bluesky's community responds well to genuine transparency about how something gets built or made.
  • Commentary on your field — reacting to news or trends in your niche with an actual opinion, not just a summary.
  • Community engagement — replies, quote-posts, and conversation threads that aren't standalone content but still reinforce what you're known for.

Three or four is plenty. More than five and you'll struggle to post consistently enough in each one for it to register as a pattern.

How pillars shape a month

Once you have pillars, planning a month is mostly rotation, not invention. You're not inventing a new topic from scratch each time you sit down — you're asking which pillar hasn't had a turn recently. That alone removes most of the friction that causes irregular posting.

Bluesky's format rewards a specific kind of pillar

Because Bluesky posts are short and threading is easy, pillars that work well as either a single sharp post or an expandable thread give you the most flexibility. A pillar that only works as a long essay is a worse fit here than one that can be said in one line or unpacked in five.

Adjusting over time

Watch which pillar actually gets replies and quote-posts versus which one gets silence. Bluesky's audience is vocal when they engage — a pillar that consistently underperforms is worth retiring or reworking rather than posting out of obligation.
